I’ve played through about twenty or thirty levels in Speed King, and to be honest, it’s a bit addictive but also quite gruelling. At first glance, the art style made me think it was one of those light-hearted, casual games, but as soon as I started playing, I realised it was nothing of the sort. The controls involve nothing but swiping or tapping to sprint, but the pace is incredibly fast; if you’re not careful, you’ll crash into an enemy or the edge of the screen, forcing you to start all over again. It gives you that feeling of ‘just one more go and I’ll beat it’. The best bit is when you get a smooth flow going – chaining together sprints and clearing boxes is incredibly cathartic. It’s a bit like ‘farming a route’, and pulling it off in one go is really satisfying. All in all, it’s not bad.
