When I first saw the title *Extreme Rally Challenge*, I was actually quite excited; after all, ‘Extreme + Rally’ sounds like the sort of hardcore, adrenaline-fuelled off-road racing I love. But having actually played it, I’d say it’s a mixed bag. Let’s start with the positives. What I’m most pleased with is that the game has got its ‘realism’ spot on. Many rally games lean more towards entertainment, but this one clearly aims for a more realistic approach. For instance, the changes in road grip and vehicle handling really make a difference – it’s not just a case of ‘hit the accelerator and you’re done’. Each car feels very different, and the contrast is even more pronounced when driving on the tracks. Another point is the track design. Many of the maps feature long-distance routes; some races even last for quite a while. This kind of experience is actually quite rare in standard racing games, and it captures that ‘endurance and focus’ feel of a real rally. Furthermore, the recreation of the real-world terrain is truly outstanding; on the track, you can even experience the sensation of the sun glaring in your eyes, and the rendering of light in valleys and plains is also superb. However, the drawbacks are equally apparent. After playing for a while, you’ll find the pace rather monotonous, with few real ‘high points’. Unlike some racing games that offer clear progression feedback, this one feels more like a constant challenge to push your own limits, which some players may find a bit ‘tedious’. Another issue is the limited selection of car models; there are only three or four cars to choose from, and there’s no progression system to speak of.
